Hazzardous Universe 2: The Magician's Last Words--Book Buzzin'

Hazzardous Universe 2: The Magicians' Last Words by Julie Wright. Book two in a great series. I'm excited about this one!

Fourteen-year-old Hap Hazzard is the most wanted teenager in the universe. His life has been pure pandemonium ever since he and his almost-friend Tara were beamed from their boring lives onto a spaceship where they were needed to fulfill an insanely dangerous assignment: recovering nine hidden books-records that would give the Dark Ones power to dominate the universe. After overcoming a host of nearly impossible intergalactic challenges in the first leg of their journey, Hap and Tara have only two of the missing nine books-and the clock is ticking. Racing their nemesis Don Nova to a rock concert on the Lizard Comet, they meet up with Confucian, an eccentric young earthling who becomes their ally in the urgent search. But things go south quickly, and Hap and Tara and their unconventional crew must venture ever further into space, where dark and dreadful things lurk in the vast shadows. With the fate of the entire universe at stake, Hap and his friends press on against the odds-fighting their fear as they race toward the unimaginable perils that loom ahead

Outlining, Part 1--The Hero's Journey

The Hero’s Journey
Welcome to part 1 of my journey to outlining. If you missed my intro, take a look here.

The Hero’s Journey is one type of outline that I have taken classes on several times. It has always made sense, but I’d never understood how to apply it to my writing. Honestly, I wasn’t ready for the information.
Now, the more I learn about the Hero’s Journey, I can see how it can be useful in my writing. However, everyone is different and you have to find what works for you. I, myself, thought that this would be the method I would try. After the last conference I attended, I’m not so sure about that. I think I may use bits and pieces from a few different methods and make my own.
So, I am going to share my notes from the most recent class I attended on The Hero’s Journey from Annette Lyon (Thank you Annette for a great class!) at the LDStorymakers conference in May, as well as some links at the bottom of different versions of the Hero’s Journey.

With caring persistence, Persephone attempts to pierce the Duke’s armor and reach the man beneath. Yet he cannot tolerate such exposure, and his repeated rejections take their toll. Million Dollar Diva Book Review & Book Deal

MILLION DOLLAR DIVA THE SMART WOMAN'S GUIDE TO GETTING RICH SAFELY by Tristi Pinkston, Brett Kitchen, & Ethan Kap.

This cute, little, pink book holds more information than I originally gave it credit for. As one who likes to learn the best way to increase my money, I was interested to see if this book said anything new. To my surprise, it did.

Unlike most books that deal with finances, this one was easy to understand and relate to. It is more of a conversation between Tristi and Brett and Ethan. Questions are asked. Answers are given in an understandable way. Information is shared, and solutions are presented. It really a win/win situation for everyone.

The unique thing about this book, though, is that Tristi is sharing her personal journey through the steps given to help people get out of debt and increase their wealth. It's not just some random person that never shares how hard the journey really was. It's a friend who tells the truth. Tristi has even set up a blog to follow her journey to financial freedom.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is struggling to stay above water financially, and anyone who would like some pointers on how to increase their nest egg. Check out the website for a ton of free info and worksheets to get you started on your journey. And a really cute book trailer. :)

Possession Book Buzzin'

POSSESSION by Elana Johnson

Vi knows the Rule: Girls don't walk with boys, and they never even thinkabout kissing them. But no one makes Vi want to break the Rules more than Zenn...and since the Thinkers have chosen him as Vi's future match, how much trouble can one kiss cause? The Thinkers may have brainwashed the rest of the population, but Vi is determined to think for herself.

But the Thinkers are unusually persuasive, and they're set on convincing Vi to become one of them...starting by brainwashing Zenn. Vi can't leave Zenn in the Thinkers' hands, but she's wary of joining the rebellion, especially since that means teaming up with Jag. Jag is egotistical, charismatic, and dangerous--everything Zenn's not. Vi can't quite trust Jag and can't quite resist him, but she also can't give up on Zenn.

This is a game of control or be controlled. And Vi has no choice but to play.

To Outline or Not To Oultine, What a Question

I never outline. I hate it. My husband would tell me to not use the word never because it rarely is accurate. Well, I can honestly say, I NEVER outline. Even in school, when an outline was required for a project, I would finish the assignment first, and then write the outline. I haven’t figured out if that’s because I never really understood how to create one or I didn’t know what I wanted to do or the real reason I never outlined.
Many workshops I’ve attended have talked about two kinds of writers, discovery writers and outliners. I most definitely would be a discovery person. There is a certain thrill to sitting down to a blank screen and letting the story flow, having only a general idea of what I think might happen. For the most part, I know how I want to start and where I am going to end, but the middle . . . who knows. That’s where to fun is, in my opinion.
In one of my novels, I had a character literally (well, literally as in the story literally) walk into a scene. My heart pounded, I sat up straight, and cocked my head as I asked, “Now who are you? And what role do you play in this story?” It was so much fun to see this character develop and weave through different scenes and I get chills even thinking about it. :)
Part of me thinks that outliners look down on discovery writers. That most likely is my own assumption, and assumptions always get me in trouble, but for a long time, that’s how I’ve felt. All those outline, Hero’s Journey, Snowflake method type blogs or workshops I’ve sat through, I’ve listened only half-heartedly because after all, I know my style and it’s not outlining. I will NEVER use an outline.
Well, . . . *clears throat* . . . here’s where I watch the pigs fly across the room or eat my shoe or whatever other cliche you’d like to insert. Since I’ve become a mom, I have found my time somewhat preoccupied and my writing time, shall we say . . . limited. I know, crazy, right? Who would have ever thought. (Those of you who smiled at me when I was talking about how I’d still have time, feel free to say, “I told you so.”)
I am beginning to see how an outline might actually be beneficial. It will help me use my time more wisely so when I do end up with a block amount of time to write, I’m not staring at the computer screen, watching the time tick by, and freaking out that I won’t be able to get my fabulous idea on the page before it leaves because I might not remember it later.   With an outline, I have the fabulous idea already mapped out and can refer back to it whenever I need to. I’m hoping lightning doesn’t strike. :) That’s not to say that I am jumping right in on the outlining bandwagon, but I am very eagerly going through all my notes, trying to find the outlining method that will work best for me.
I have an idea of what I’m going to try to use, but I’d love to hear what your favorite methods are. I will share what I know (and what I research) of those methods in future blog posts. Then if you are a discovery writer who might want to venture over to the world of outlining, you’ll have some different ways to choose from.
In the meantime, Happy Writing!

Seeking Persephone Book Review

Seeking Persephone by Sarah M. Eden is a regency romance. I'm not necessarily a die hard fan of this genre, but Sarah's books have me hooked from the first page. I love the whit and humorous approach the characters take to solving problems. Seeking Persephone is the story of two characters that were introduced in Courting Miss Lancaster, which I also thoroughly enjoyed. Check out my review here. I almost wish I had this book first, but I'll take them anyway they come! This book is good for anyone, especially those who love a good laugh tied into a romance.

From the back cover: When Persephone Lancaster receives a marriage proposal from the ill-tempered Duke of Kielder, she refuses — and then reconsiders. The obscene sum of money he’s offering Persephone would save her family from ruin. With her characteristic optimism, she travels to the far reaches of Northumberland to wed a greatly feared stranger.

Lodged deep in a thick forest infested with wild dogs, the Duke’s castle is as cold and forbidding as the Duke himself, a man with terrible scars on his body and his soul. But the Duke’s steely determination to protect his heart at all costs is challenged by his growing attachment to his lovely and gentle bride. With caring persistence, Persephone attempts to pierce the Duke’s armor and reach the man beneath. Yet he cannot tolerate such exposure, and his repeated rejections take their toll. But when grave danger arises, the Duke realizes he must face the risk of revealing his true feelings or lose the woman he cannot live without.
