DEEP CONVICTION by Steven T Collis. This was a fascinating read. It brought home and to light how important religious freedom really is, and how far people will go to keep that freedom. I was enthralled with these stories of individuals who wouldn't back down on their personal beliefs no matter what the consequence. In the end, the book caused me to reflect on my personal beliefs and how deep my conviction is. Would I be willing to stand up the way these people did? It was incredibly enlightening and I would recommend it to everyone. Everyone needs to take a look at these stories and determine what they have a deep conviction in.

Deep Conviction features four ordinary Americans who put their reputations and livelihoods at risk as they fought to protect their first amendment right to live their personal beliefs. Though these individuals couldn’t be more different, they share a similar conviction and determination, and the principles of religious freedom apply equally to all of them.

In 1813, a Catholic priest in New York City faced prison after a grand jury subpoenaed him for refusing to divulge the identity of a jewelry thief who admitted to the crime during the sacrament of confession.

In 1959, an atheist in Maryland was forced to choose between his job and his beliefs when the state required him, as part of the hiring process, to sign an oath that said he believed in God. The United States Supreme Court would decide his fate.

In 1989, a Klamath Indian man walked into the highest court of our nation to fight for the right to practice the central sacrament of the Native American Church after the state of Oregon had declared it illegal.

And, finally, in 2017, a Christian baker and a gay couple took their cases to the United States Supreme Court after the baker declined to create a custom wedding cake to celebrate the couple’s same-sex marriage, fearing it would violate his duty to God.

Chosen for their universality and for the broad principles they represent, these true stories reflect the diversity of beliefs in the United States, the conflicts between religious freedom and other interests, the perils individuals face when their right to live their beliefs is threatened, and the genius of America’s promise of religious liberty for all.

TREK THE MOVIE

TREK THE MOVIE. I watched this movie with my kids and enjoyed most of it. It has a lot of things that would be over someone's head if they've never heard of or been on a trek before though. I had to explain a lot to my kids. However, they did get some of the humor and I laughed through most of it. They did a good job portraying a trek for the most part. There is growth for most of the characters and some really good, powerful lessons that were shown. There were some cheesy things but overall it was an enjoyable film that I would recommend to most people. It is worth seeing at least once. There is a curse word in it that surprised me since it really didn't need to be used.

Trek follows a young Mormon teenager named Tom and his friends on their handcart journey. Along the way, they try to smuggle in unsanctioned food, battle sibling rivalry, encounter a "special ops" Young Men leader, match wits with a Twinkie-loving skunk, and ponder doctrinal brain teasers like, "Do General Authorities go to PG-13 movies?" But, when they encounter unexpected trouble, their faith is tested much like that of their pioneer ancestors. Whether you've been on a trek or not, your family will laugh along and ultimately be inspired as you enjoy this delightful film.

THE BEAUTIFUL BALANCE by Michelle Wilson. I have loved this book from the very beginning. I had the priveledge of reading through several of the first writings of this book and it has been so much fun to see it evolve and grow into what it currently is. Michelle shares such a beautiful message in a fun, approachable way. It is a great reminder of where one can and should be in their relationship with God. Even this time as I read it, I was again brought to see more improvements that I can make in my life. Lavinda and Carol's stories are truly inspiring. As I read what she wrote about my story, I see where I was and it puts my personal doubts and questions at ease. This is a fantastic read that I recommend for anyone and everyone. We all feel out of control at times (at least I hope I'm not the only one) and this book shares a good way to claim that personal control once again.

THE CHRIST-CENTERED HOME by Emily Belle Freeman. I loved how this book was sectioned in a way that it wasn't overwhelming to read. Sometimes when I dive into books like this I feel like I'll never be able to do anything they're talking about because it's so huge. In contrast, this book has something to focus on each month, something small. For example, one of the months was focusing on prayer or the act of inviting the Savior into your home. That's something small I can handle at this time in my life. I loved the comforting feeling the came as I was reading the book. It definitely calmed my crazy life. This is a book for anyone who is looking for a way to focus more on the Savior. Really it is for anyone who loved the Savior and wants Him to be more a part of their daily lives. I would highly recommend it.

WILL MY CHILD BE READY? IDEAS FOR PREPARING FUTURE MISSIONARIES OF ALL AGES edited by Emily Freeman and Merrilee Boyack. As I look back on how I was raised, it felt like everywhere I turned I had been taught differently than the rest of the world. Not in a bad way, just different. This book talks about how to prepare future missionaries and I found myself saying, "Yup. That's what I was taught." So in a way, it feels like this book talks about how I was raised. I agree with the principles that are introduced and the ways they suggest on how to teach them to children of all ages. To me, all of these principles again teach a child to not only be a good missionary, but also a great citizen in the community, a wonderful friend, a kind neighbor. I think we can all benifit from implimenting the principles talked about in this book. I highly recommend it to any and everyone.

WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO by Don H. Staheli. I think this book is a little gem. I enjoyed all the short chapters on how to really become a better person as a whole, who is in tune with the Spirit. It's great principles to teach that he applied specifically to missionaries and missionary work, but it can work for those looking to teach their children good, independent behavior, and working well with others. I loved the "In Their Own Words" section that had specific missionary experiences from the mouths of those who served under President Staheli. I would highly recommend this book to anyone with children of any age. It is a wonderful resource.

THE WAY BACK TO HEAVEN by S. Michael Wilcox. The parable of the Crystal Stairs is the subtitle. What a sweet parable. I worked with the author back when I attended the University of Utah. He had a way with teaching gospel principles that reached out and grabbed you. This book is no different. It have me a lot to think about and I loved the personal touches he added to each step of the journey. This parable is a perfect way to describe how one is to return to live with our Father in Heaven. It's is beautifully written and I would recommend it to everyone.

LOVE IS A CHOICE by Lynn G Robbins. This has been a very interesting, informative read. A lot of us read about falling in love and the perfect romance. We see it depicted on the big screen. We watch people fall in "love at first sight" and our hearts thrum and we set our expectations on what we believe love really is. This book shows us that love really is a choice. It shows us that we need to take responsibility for our own actions. We need to give marriages a chance, even when things get tough. Now I'm not saying that you should never get divorced. There are always exceptions and situations which are not healthy and people should get out of. All I'm saying is that this book gives great guidance on what love really is and can be. It is one that anyone and everyone who is in any type of relationship should read because it's not just in a marriage relationship that we love someone else.

It helped me understand in more details the covenants they make as they choose to take on the responsibilities of the priesthood. THE BLUEPRINT OF CHRIST'S CHURCH by Tad R. Callister. I have really enjoyed this book. It's broken up into small sections that are digestable. I was able to search for those things that I wanted to learn more about and read those sections. I didn't have to read through a lot of material to find what I was looking for. This book will answer questions for both friends of other faiths and those who share my beliefs. I highly recommend this to anyone whether they are searching for answers or not.

MOSES CHRONICLES: BONDAGE by H. B. Moore. This book sounded fascinating, and it was. I enjoyed reading about this time in history and particularly this story. However, even though I know it was accurate to the era, I didn't like all the innuendos. For some reason it put a beloved story into a different light for me. As long as I was able to kept my perspective on the historical fiction part of it, I enjoyed the read. It is a fascinating story that most people will love.

I was able to flip through and find those talks that spoke to me and helped me find answers to some things I am struggling with right now. I know that it is a book I can and will frequently referred back to for advice and answers. I highly recommend this to everyone.

The messages are fairly short and the titles of each chapter make it very clear who Elder Holland is talking to. It makes it easy to flip through and find the counsel you need at that specific moment. I highly recommend this book to any and everyone who believes in Jesus Christ. It's a book that I think should be in every Christian's library.

VISIONS OF HOPE by Annie Henrie. This beautiful book contains some wonderful artwork coupled with inspiring scriptures and truth. The pictures were a little different than my taste and they didn't hold my son's interest as much as I would have liked them too, but the artist is obviously very talented. Everyone should take a look at her work.

A REFUGE FROM THE STORM by Boyd K Packer. I have always enjoyed President Packer's talks and this book is no exception. It covered things I already know as well as expanded my knowledge of the priesthood, the family, and the Church. The subsections were small enough that I could read one or two and then put the book down put still understand where I was when I picked it back up again. It's a wonderful addition to any library.

IT'S BETTER TO LOOK UP. I loved this book. It's great to be able to sit down and read an inspirational story in about five minutes. All of the stories are familiar but it's a great, easy way to have a quick spiritual boost in the middle of a hectic day. I highly recommend this book to any and everyone.

THE 7 DAY CHRISTIAN by Brad Wilcox. This was an interesting read. I enjoyed the stories and experiences he pulled from his life to help teach the principle that we need to be Christian's every day rather than just on Sunday. The chapters were short enough that I could set it aside to think about what he said and then come back to it. He bears a powerful testimony of the effect of being an every day Christian. This book was written for everyone and is not specific to one religion. I would recommend it to anyone who professes to be a Christian as we all, including myself, can use a pick me up and reminder of how to life a more Christ-like life.
