PRAYING WITH THE ENEMY by Steven T. Collis. This fantastic read was released this week. A historical fiction about the Korean War with the viewpoint from four different people was so well done. I was drawn in from chapter one and couldn't put it down. The feelings and opinions of each person were so strong and in a way relatable. War is not for the faint of heart but when you are able to experience it through the eyes of another, it makes at least me feel that much more grateful for our freedoms and those who have sacrificed to maintain our freedoms. What a beautiful story brought to life. It is one every person should read.

THE SLOW MARCH OF LIGHT by Heather B Moore. What an amazing, inspirational story. There was a lot of learning and relearning done for me in this book. The constant gratitude in the face of extreme hardship, the forgiveness given, and the personal discoveries made were only the beginning. The heroism of people to help fellow countrymen is inspiring and should shape the way we look at things today. It is such a great story. I highly recommend it.

In the summer of 1961, a wall of barbed wire goes up quickly in the dead of night, officially dividing Berlin. Luisa Voigt lives in West Berlin, but her grandmother lives across the border and is now trapped inside the newly- isolated communist country of East Germany. Desperate to rescue her grandmother and aware of the many others whose families have been divided, Luisa joins a secret spy network, risking her life to help bring others through a makeshift, underground tunnel to West Germany. Their work is dangerous and not everyone will successfully escape or live to see freedom. 

Bob Inama was an outstanding university student, with plans to attend law school when he is drafted into the US Army. Stationed in West Germany, he is glad to be fluent in German, especially after meeting Luisa Voigt at a church social. As they spend time together, they form a close connection. But when Bob receives classified orders to leave for undercover work immediately, he does not get the chance to say goodbye.

With a fake identity, Bob's special assignment is to be a spy embedded in East Germany. His undercover job will give him access to government sites to map out strategic military targets. IN TIMES OF RAIN AND WAR by Cameron Wright. I have read a lot of WWII novels lately and am continually dumbfounded at how all encompassing it was. That should be a given, but with each novel I have been given a glimpse into one small portion of the World War. This novel was no different. The job of the Bomb Disposal Companies were just as life threatening as being on the front. This story showed the importance of those crews, as well as the importance of friendships in a time of such uncertainty and frankly insanity. Audrey and Lieutenant Wesley were perfect for each other in so many ways. I loved watching their relationship grow through so many obstacles. There are some semi-graphic parts as humans and bombs are not a good mix, but I would say this is a must read for all the WWII lovers as well as everyone else.

 Okay. Thanks for hanging in there with me. I'm still figuring out the best way to do this. I think it'll be a week at a time. So here's catching up for the last week and this one.

We love the Old Lady books here. I tried to find this one on Amazon and it's not there yet, but it IS in the Scholastic Book Clubs. Great, fun way to learn, teach, and reinforce sequencing. 

I really enjoyed this book. It gives an insight into the current President that the media has not allowed. It was very enlightening to see his ideas in 2000 and what he has done in his presidency. Whether you agree with everything or not, it is a very informative read that I would recommend.

I love Clair Poulson books. This one was not my favorite. There were so many different elements to the mystery and so many different people involved that it felt like too much. I love a good red herring, but this had several that all twisted together. Of course, it could be that I feel like my live at the moment is twisting in so many different directions that reading a plot this involved was too much for me at the moment.

Lauralyn LaPlant and her sister, Bridgette, could not be closer. Their shared passion for adventure draws them to scale a sheer cliff one fateful day, but despite their experienced precautions, Bridgette suffers a terrible accident and plummets to an untimely death. I look forward to reading this one. These types of books always take me longer to get through as I find I can't speed read through it. I have to take my time, and time is not something I always have.

This was a cute read that I had forgotten I'd already read. It's a sweet romance that has life getting in the way of two people. I did enjoy the cute ending and it's a great read for anyone who loves a sweet romance.

Swallowing her pride, Rachel sets aside her law firm aspirations for what she envisions as secretarial work—mountains of paperwork and filing. Good, fast paced read, but it felt under-developed. I would have liked more from one of the plot lines. Halfway through the book I said to myself, "It's finally hitting it's stride." The plot lines merged and then fizzled out. I'd love to see another to round out the story.

Jamie Madero's summer internship turns out to be anything but ordinary when he discovers the truth about The Freemen Foundation. Now outnumbered and outgunned, Jamie and his fellow Insiders must stay one step ahead of their enemies to survive in this high-stakes novel of intrigue and deception. This perfect adrenaline rush of a book is suspenseful, surprising, and packed with action. You won't be able to put it down.

Fantastic beginning. I loved the characters but to me it was an odd read. I would have liked Poe to grow enough to let someone else in sooner than she did. There was some back story, but to me, it felt like there needed to be a little bit more to understand both sides more clearly.

Fascinating read. I loved how she wrote the book through lunches with her friends and taught the reader, along with her friends, the principles of investing. It is an empowering book that will leave you wanting to take control of your financial freedom. Highly recommend it.

My 4th grader asked me to read this book with him. I had started it before and never finished it, so he gave me the motivation to move through them with him. I found the war scenes with the dragons a bit on the gruesome side. Throughout the first half or so of the book I wondered what kids saw in the story. As it progressed, I saw and understood though. I've read through the first story arc (books 1-5) and have to say the last two are my favorite. I do love the characters, and I know my son loves them. You can't ask for more than that.

I love Jennifer's books. Every one is amazing and this is no exception. I can't believe what people did to keep books around and the risks they took. It would be good for us to remember the true sacrifices people made in order to preserve words on a page. Highly recommend this one.

HIS LADY IN HIDING by Jen Geigle Johnson. What a fascinating read. It is set in the time after the Civil War and very clearly showed the struggle not only for freed slaves but for the Americans with the title English migrating to the United States. It was fascinating to me to see those differences and remember that racial and class struggles have been around for a really long time. I loved Lady Elizabeth and how she grew as a person and how Lord Barton complimented that growth in every way. I love seeing characters grow for the better and overcome obstacles. And, of course, the romantic aspect fit very nicely into the story. I would highly recommend it to any and everyone.

THE LAST MAN AT THE INN by R William Bennett. For some reason, I had it in my head that this was more of a contemporary version of a man's journey to Christ. So I was surprised and intrigued when I realized I was mistaken and the story was set in the time of Christ. I thought Simon's journey could be and is similar to many of our own personal journeys in coming to Christ. The close connection his family had to the Messiah was beautiful. It really took me, as a reader, to that time and I could imagine myself there, learning along side Simon and his family. It is worth reading and will stregthen a testimony of Christ as well as bring thought to those who are unsure of what to believe. It is a wonderful story I would recommend to everyone.

Simon considers himself fortunate after securing the final room at the inn in Bethlehem. While eating his supper, he sees a younger man and his pregnant wife denied lodging at the door of the inn. Simon momentarily considers giving up his space, but he is weary from his travels as a spice merchant and turns away from the thought.

Over the ensuing years, Simon traverses the popular trade routes, and each time he passes Bethlehem, he is reminded of that evening and plagued by guilt.

In time, the Savior begins his ministry, and Simon begins the life-changing process of trying to understand and believe the teachings and miracles of this man called Jesus—said to be the promised Messiah.

The Last Man at the Inn is the story of a journey of conversion we all take in one form or another, told through the eyes and heart of a common man. It is written to affirm the believer, to lovingly beckon to the undecided, and to call out to those who may not even know they are looking for something—only that there is a space in their soul that somehow needs to be filled.

THE SHIPBUILDER'S WIFE by Jennifer Moore. I really enjoyed this book. Not only were the characters fun to love, it gave me a different sense of what the world was like in America during this particular time period. It showed how war changes some people and brings others closer. It showed how shallow some people in society were as well as who kind and loving others are. I loved Lydia and her growth throughout the store. I enjoyed watching Jacob learn to deal with his trust issues. There was one unanswered question that I'm hoping will be answered in another novel sometime, or it just may be one that is left dangling. I'd love to hear your thoughts on this. It was a wonderful read that I would recommend to anyone.

ALL THAT MAKES LIFE BRIGHT by Josi S. Kilpack. In a way, this book was hard to get through. I have felt all of the overwhelming feelings and sense of losing ones self that Harriet talks about. It was hard to read about someone else going through almost exactly what I feel. However, it was comforting to see that things were worked out and to see how they worked out for her and Calvin. It was interesting to learn what added to and helped Harriet become the great writer she was known for. I would recommend this book to anyone.

Her husband Calvin is completely supportive and said she must be a literary woman. PETTICOAT SPY by Carol Warburton. I love learning about this era. I love the courage, strength, and conviction that everyone had during this time. This story did a great job showing the risks some Patriot's took. The characters were developed well and you feel drawn too them. However, I expected a little more interaction between Abby and Gideon. It was a great story that anyone would love, especially a history buff. I highly recommend it.

THE LADY OF THE LAKES by Josi S Kilpack. This was a very fun read once I was able to get into it. I have family currently in Scotland so it was fun read about places that I've heard about from them.  It was a fascinating story to see how his writing career moved forward. I loved seeing Scott's growth through the entire time as well. It is a wonderful read for anyone who loves historical fiction and romance. I highly recommend it.

WINTER SKY by Chris Stewart

WINTER SKY by Chris Stewart. Wow! This is an incredible story. It truly had me hooked from the first page. I loved seeing this perspective of the war. I loved the young rebel and all the people he met along the way. Everyone has a reason they do what they do. It was fascinating to learn about each of these characters. I did have trouble figuring out who's point of view the story was in, even within each section. Once I settle on an omniscient POV it made it easier to continue. I would highly recommend this novel to anyone, especially those with a love for historical things.

Since it arrived in the mail yesterday, you'll have to stay tuned for my review later this week but I can already tell it will be difficult to put down.

LOVING LEAH by Lynn Larson—book review/giveaway

LOVING LEAH by Lynn Larson. This was an interesting read that really didn't go the way I expected it to. In a lot of ways I felt like it was the main character reliving the past and telling the story for a good portion of the book. Then as it was getting exciting and harder to put the book down, the story was being lived by Ethan (which is the way I prefer to read stories).

The history that was told through this story was heartbreaking and something I knew nothing about. That being said, I was disappointed in the ending. Some things were resolved but I was left with more questions than satisfying ends. However, it is a good historical read if you like a story about a piece of history that is not well-known.

HEART'S JOURNEY by Kristen McKendry. This was an interesting historical romance. For me, it was a slow start. I enjoyed the oddities for the time period and the little tidbits of information that I learned about this particular era, but the plot was a bit slow for me. The characters were fun and it was a clean read. I can recommend it to anyone.
