FREETOWN — #review

FREETOWN. What a powerful, gripping story. I felt the tension and conflict from the beginning. The actors did an incredible job portraying their people. It's absolutely amazing what people and the church lived through. It makes me very grateful for my life. It is a great movie for adults. For me, there was too much violence for my young children. I would recommend it to anyone who loves a great movie full of faith, trial, and survival. (Based on true events.)

:) :) :) :) :)

Caught in the middle of a brutal civil war, six Liberian missionaries in Monrovia flee the widespread violence of their native country. Their destination: Freetown, Sierra Leone. With the help of local Church leader Phillip Abubakar (Henry Adofo), the missionaries make the difficult journey only to have their troubles compounded by a rebel fighter bent on killing one of their own. Based on true events, Freetown is a thrilling and inspiring story of hope and survival.

WILL MY CHILD BE READY? edited by Emily Freeman & Merrilee Boyack — #reviews #books #amreading

WILL MY CHILD BE READY? IDEAS FOR PREPARING FUTURE MISSIONARIES OF ALL AGES edited by Emily Freeman and Merrilee Boyack. As I look back on how I was raised, it felt like everywhere I turned I had been taught differently than the rest of the world. Not in a bad way, just different. This book talks about how to prepare future missionaries and I found myself saying, "Yup. That's what I was taught." So in a way, it feels like this book talks about how I was raised. I agree with the principles that are introduced and the ways they suggest on how to teach them to children of all ages. To me, all of these principles again teach a child to not only be a good missionary, but also a great citizen in the community, a wonderful friend, a kind neighbor. I think we can all benifit from implimenting the principles talked about in this book. I highly recommend it to any and everyone.

:) :) :) :) :)

Mothers have an immeasurable influence and a significant responsibility in raising up young men and women who are prepared to further the work of the Lord. This unique resource includes 12 training chapters for moms of prospective missionaries, all written by mothers who have sent children on missions (and some by mothers who have also served as mission presidents wives). Whether you have young children and are hoping to begin the mission training process early or you have less than a year to pull all the pieces together, here is the good news: the path of preparing a child for a mission begins wherever you are. Chapters on topics such as fostering good daily habits, developing relationship skills, being resilient, and recognizing the Spirit shed light on what future missionaries need to know, what they need to do, and what they need to be.

WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO by Don H Staheli —#amreading #books #reviews

WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO by Don H. Staheli. I think this book is a little gem. I enjoyed all the short chapters on how to really become a better person as a whole, who is in tune with the Spirit. It's great principles to teach that he applied specifically to missionaries and missionary work, but it can work for those looking to teach their children good, independent behavior, and working well with others. I loved the "In Their Own Words" section that had specific missionary experiences from the mouths of those who served under President Staheli. I would highly recommend this book to anyone with children of any age. It is a wonderful resource.

:) :) :) :) :)

As a former mission president and missionary preparation instructor, author Don H. Staheli is familiar with the questions, concerns, and needs of new missionaries. He also knows that the most effective missionaries are those who have learned how to be a missionary, not just those who have learned how to do missionary work. The most important elements of good missionary work are the heart and soul of the missionary, he states. This book provides gospel insights, tips, and inspiration that will give new missionaries confidence in their callings and help them to overcome discouragement, recognize the voice of the Spirit, eliminate distractions, set realistic goals, get up in the morning (even when it is cold and dark), find joy in the work, and prepare to bear a bold testimony of the restored gospel.

THE WAY BACK TO HEAVEN by S. Michael Wilcox — #amreading #books #reviews

THE WAY BACK TO HEAVEN by S. Michael Wilcox. The parable of the Crystal Stairs is the subtitle. What a sweet parable. I worked with the author back when I attended the University of Utah. He had a way with teaching gospel principles that reached out and grabbed you. This book is no different. It have me a lot to think about and I loved the personal touches he added to each step of the journey. This parable is a perfect way to describe how one is to return to live with our Father in Heaven. It's is beautifully written and I would recommend it to everyone.

:) :) :) :)

Our earliest scripture tells the story of those who thought they could build a structure high enough to get to heaven, and of the consequences of that mistaken belief. In contrast, the prophet Jacob dreamed of a ladder sent down from heaven by God, with rungs—steps—that we could ascend to return to Him. In The Way Back to Heaven: The Parable of the Crystal Stairs, award-winning author S. Michael Wilcox helps us discern the "stairs of man" from the "stairs of God." Using the metaphor of a beautiful crystal stairway, he shows us the difference between a focus on "being and becoming" and "believing and doing" in our life's journey. While we may think we know the steps we'll need to take, the author suggests some unexpected—even counterintuitive—yet essential stairs each of us will encounter as we make our way back to our Father in Heaven.

LOVE IS A CHOICE by Lynn G Robbins — #reviews #books #amreading

LOVE IS A CHOICE by Lynn G Robbins. This has been a very interesting, informative read. A lot of us read about falling in love and the perfect romance. We see it depicted on the big screen. We watch people fall in "love at first sight" and our hearts thrum and we set our expectations on what we believe love really is. This book shows us that love really is a choice. It shows us that we need to take responsibility for our own actions. We need to give marriages a chance, even when things get tough. Now I'm not saying that you should never get divorced. There are always exceptions and situations which are not healthy and people should get out of. All I'm saying is that this book gives great guidance on what love really is and can be. It is one that anyone and everyone who is in any type of relationship should read because it's not just in a marriage relationship that we love someone else.

:) :) :) :) :)

We all know that actions speak louder than words. We may say “I love you,” but do our actions back up that claim? Elder Lynn G. Robbins teaches us that love is more than a feeling — it is a commitment, a promise to be responsible, respectful, and responsive to the needs and experiences of other. And like any other action we undertake, perfecting the act of love requires a lifetime of practice and good choices.
As Elder Robbins teaches, the daily choices we make in our marriages and families are what shape lasting love. He helps us to recognize the role that our agency plays in developing forgiveness, patience, kindness, responsibility, and other virtuous traits. We come to see that as we actively try to do things differently, Christ helps us to bethe people He wants us to be — people like Him.
Whether you're engaged to be married, a newlywed, or someone with decades of marriage under your belt, this counsel from an inspired leader will help you develop more Christlike love for those around you. As you draw closer to the Savior through your daily choices and actions, His love will fill your home.

MEN OF COVENANT by Robert L Millet — #amreading #reviews #bookreviews

MEN OF COVENANT by Robert L Millet. This is a great book for those who are raising boys. It helped me understand in more details the covenants they make as they choose to take on the responsibilities of the priesthood. It is divided up in a way that makes it easy to reference with questions, to find answers, and to explain to young men. I would highly recommend it to anyone who associates with a priestholder or a someday priesthood holder.

:) :) :) :)

We are a covenant-making people, but do we fully appreciate the power of the promises contained in just the twelve short verses of the oath and covenant of the priesthood?
In Men of Covenant, companion to Men of Valor and Men of Influence, author Robert L. Millet invites us to explore such questions as these:
What are the terms and conditions of the oath and covenant of the priesthood?
What would my life be like if I were more focused on my covenants?
How could my more covenant-focused life affect my family and others for whom I have responsibility?
As we consider the promises Melchizedek Priesthood holders make to God and His irrevocable promise to faithful priesthood holders, we discover the glorious blessings He makes available to us all, both men and women.

THE BLUEPRINT OF CHRIST'S CHURCH by Tad R Callister— #reviews #amreading

THE BLUEPRINT OF CHRIST'S CHURCH by Tad R. Callister. I have really enjoyed this book. It's broken up into small sections that are digestable. I was able to search for those things that I wanted to learn more about and read those sections. I didn't have to read through a lot of material to find what I was looking for. This book will answer questions for both friends of other faiths and those who share my beliefs. I highly recommend this to anyone whether they are searching for answers or not.

:) :) :) :) :)

A strong testimony requires a solid foundation. This is especially true in our day, when we have so much access to information from so many sources, both reliable and spurious. With the numerous voices competing for our attention, how can we avoid being "carried about with every wind of doctrine" (Eph. 4:14)?
In The Blueprint's of Christ's Church, Tad R. Callister provides a thoughtful, systematic explanation of foundational gospel principles, tying them to Jesus Christ and demonstrating how the "blueprint" of the original Church of Jesus Christ matches the structure of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Seasoned Church members and new converts alike will benefit from this "refresher course." The carefully reasoned, scripture-based summaries of a variety of basic principles offer a great resource for parents, missionaries, and Church leaders and teachers.

WHAT MAKES US SISTERS by Bonnie Oscarson— #books #bookreview #amreading

WHAT MAKES US SISTERS by Bonnie Oscarson. This cute little picture book reminds us all of what true sisterhood really is about. It reminds us that as women, we are all sisters. It's a quick, easy read that shifts our thinking toward one another. I'd recommend it to any woman out there.

:) :) :) :)

"Sisters take care of each other, watch out for each other, comfort each other, and are there for each other through thick and thin," observes Sister Bonnie L. Oscarson, Young Women general president.
In this delightful and inspiring book, Sister Oscarson encourages all women to look beyond differences in age, culture, and circumstance in order to better nurture and serve one another. She explains that all women—young or old, married or single, working in an office or running a home—have unique talents and gifts to share. Focusing on the boundless blessings that Latter-day Saint women enjoy, Sister Oscarson urges women throughout the Church to live and inspire others in ways that realize their greatest potential.

YESTERDAY, TODAY AND FOREVER by M. Russell Ballard— #bookreview #reviews #amreading

YESTERDAY, TODAY AND FOREVER by M. Russell Ballard. Another gem of a book that has changed my outlook on things. I love how each chapter is a talk on a certain subject. I was able to flip through and find those talks that spoke to me and helped me find answers to some things I am struggling with right now. I know that it is a book I can and will frequently referred back to for advice and answers. I highly recommend this to everyone.

:) :) :) :) :)

The scriptures proclaim that "God is the same yesterday, today, and forever" (Mormon 9:9). In his latest book, Elder M. Russell Ballard attests to the truth of that statement by combining his words with teachings from his grandfathers, Hyrum Mack Smith and Melvin J. Ballard. What makes this combination unique is that all three of these men have served as members of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
"In preparing this work," writes Elder Ballard, "I have seen anew that the course of the Lord truly i 'one eternal round' (Alma 37:12) and that the doctrine of the gospel is timely and timeless. It is forever relevant to disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ."
These never-before-published talks from Elder Ballard, paired with doctrinal statements from his grandfathers, will be a valuable resource for readers and a powerful testimony of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Redeemer.

TO MY FRIENDS by Jeffrey R Holland— #reviews #bookreview #amreading

TO MY FRIENDS by Jeffrey R Holland. This little gem has changed my life and my thought processes. The messages are fairly short and the titles of each chapter make it very clear who Elder Holland is talking to. It makes it easy to flip through and find the counsel you need at that specific moment. I highly recommend this book to any and everyone who believes in Jesus Christ. It's a book that I think should be in every Christian's library.

:) :) :) :) :)

"If you need a burden lifted, I want you to imagine I am in a personal, private, closed-door chat with you. I want to help you if I can." With those words, Elder Jeffrey R. Holland invites every reader of his latest book to become a friend, to receive instruction and encouragement, counsel and comfort.
Elder Holland addresses these powerful messages "to my friends who love the Lord," "to my friends who want to change," "to my friends who face opposition," and more. Each chapter begins with a beautifully designed quotation to help convey the message in an artistic way, making the book a lovely gift for friends to share. Throughout, Elder Holland's powerful witness of the Savior shines through, for, as he writes, "I am grateful for the greatest friend any of us could ever have, in time or eternity, the Lord Jesus Christ."

FIRE AND STEEL by Gerald N Lund — #bookreview #books #review #reading

by Gerald N Lund. Another fantastic beginning to a historical fiction series. I am amazed at the research he has done and how seamlessly he weaves in his characters. It's always fascinating to see different periods of time through other eyes. Lund is a master at his story/history weaver.

:) :) :) :)

The strongest steel is forged in the hottest flames. From master storyteller Gerald N. Lund comes a new blockbuster series chronicling the lives of two families who will face some of the most turbulent times in history as they are tried to their very cores. Will they be tempered and strengthened by the hammering blows, will they bend to the point of breaking, or will they completely shatter?
As volume one begins, life could not be more promising for the Eckhardts. They finally have a son, Hans, the male heir they have longed for and a child of such brilliance and promise that his success seems certain. But as youthful Hans’s ambition takes him away from his family and their small Bavarian village, the winds of unrest in Europe are about to erupt into the greatest war the world has ever known.
Kicking off a story that will cross generations—and continents—the Eckhardts must brace themselves to weather the storms and turmoil that lie ahead. Only through sheer determination and fortitude will they be able to pass through the refiner’s fire and come out stronger and more united than ever before.

ONLY THE BRAVE by Gerald N Lund #bookreview #reviews #books

ONLY THE BRAVE by Gerald N Lund. I really like Lund's historical fiction. I always have, and this book is no exception. I marvel at the amount of research he does and how he weaves these fictional families into history flawlessly so that we can experience the time through their eyes. It's easy to fall in love with these characters and follow them through their journeys. It's amazing what the early pioneers went through in order to settle different parts of Utah and Arizona. I highly recommend this book to any and everyone, especially those history lovers.

:) :) :) :) :)

As this standalone sequel to The Undaunted begins, four years have passed since the first Mormon pioneers made the harrowing journey to carve the Hole-in-the-Rock trail to the region of the San Juan River in southeastern Utah. In that time, the settlers have dug in deep to try to establish roots in this untamed and unforgiving desert, but life is still far from easy. Biting winds, devastating floods, scorching heat, barren terrain, and tensions with everyone from Indians to outlaws to competing ranchers have threatened the pioneers' ability to thrive—or even survive.
But the call from Church leaders to establish peaceful, stable settlements in the volatile region still stands, so young Mitch Westland and his family must find a way to make a home amid the harshest of circumstances. They soon learn that their only chance of success lies in uniting together with the other faithful Saints—including the Zimmers and their charming daughter, Edie. Can the families withstand the blows that seem to come every step of the way as they struggle against man, nature, and their own fears to heed a prophetic call? Many settle will try to conquer that rugged territory, but only the brave will prevail.

VISIONS OF HOPE by Annie Henrie—book review/#amreading #books #bookreview

VISIONS OF HOPE by Annie Henrie. This beautiful book contains some wonderful artwork coupled with inspiring scriptures and truth. The pictures were a little different than my taste and they didn't hold my son's interest as much as I would have liked them too, but the artist is obviously very talented. Everyone should take a look at her work.

:) :) :)

The most fundamental questions in our lives—questions about where we came from, why we are here, and where we are gonig—are answered when we have a true understanding of the plan of salvation. Now, our understanding is deepened and enlivened by this beautifully illustrated depiction of God's eternal plan for His children. In her unique, richly textured style, fine artist Annie Henrie offers a visual interpretations of the plan of salvation, including pre-earth life, the Creation, the Fall of Adam and Eve, life on earth, the spirit world, the Atonement and the Resurrection, and the kingdoms of glory. Accompanied by text from the scriptures, each exquisite image testifies of God's love for us and of His plan of happiness.

A REFUGE FROM THE STORM by Boyd K Packer—Book Review/#amreading #books #bookreview

A REFUGE FROM THE STORM by Boyd K Packer. I have always enjoyed President Packer's talks and this book is no exception. It covered things I already know as well as expanded my knowledge of the priesthood, the family, and the Church. The subsections were small enough that I could read one or two and then put the book down put still understand where I was when I picked it back up again. It's a wonderful addition to any library.

:) :) :) :) :)

In our tempestuous day, where can we turn for refuge
It is no surprise to anyone familiar with prophecy that the latter days are stormy ones. "We live in a very dangerous world that threatens those things that are most spiritual," writes President Boyd K. Packer. "The adversary is about. His objective is to cause injury."
But there is a place of strength and peace, a true refuge from the storm. In this powerful book, President Packer discusses the priesthood, the family, and the Church, three important forces that, working together, create a haven from the world. "The gospel of Jesus Christ enables individuals to become exalted by being part of eternal families," he writes. "The gospel contains the purpose, the doctrine, and the plan. The priesthood is the power and the authority. The Church has the means and organization. The exalted, eternal family is the end of the gospel plan."
This apostolic counsel will help you build an unshakable foundation for eternity by strengthening your understanding of core doctrine regarding the priesthood, the family, and the Church.

POWER TO BECOME by David A Bednar—Review

POWER TO BECOME by David A. Bednar. This inspirational read is incredible. It's one that I didn't have to read from cover to cover. In fact I found it easier not to do it that way. I chose a topic, read about it and put it aside to digest what I had just read. Then when I'm ready, I'll pick it up again and read on another topic. I love the teachings and the examples that are shared in the book. My husband watched the discussions that are linked to this book and can't wait for his chance at the book. Be sure to take a look at those discussions, here. They are incredible.

:) :) :) :) :)

As followers of Christ, our desire is to become like Him. In fact, we have been commanded to do so. But how?
In Power to Become, Elder David A. Bednar explores how the Savior makes possible His divine commission, "Therefore I would that ye should be perfect even as I, or your Father who is in heaven is perfect" (3 Nephi 12:48).
Chapters in this thought-provoking book highlight the importance of the Atonement, the spiritual gift of personal peace, the importance of priesthood ordinances, and the responsibility we have to obey willingly and endure valiantly.
"As we increase in learning about the Savior and His gospel," Elder Bednar writes, "as we strive with ever greater consistency to act in His doctrine, ordinances, and covenants, then we are blessed with power through His Atonement to increasingly become like Him." Power to Become introduces vital tools we all can use to invite these eternally significant blessings into our lives.

ONE LITTLE MATCH by Thomas S Monson--Book Review

ONE LITTLE MATCH by Thomas S Monson. This delightful picture book illustrates a beautiful life lesson that President Monson talked about in one of his conference talks about following directions and feelings. My three-year-old was captivated by the pictures which lead to him listening to the message. It is a book we will read over and over together. I would highly recommend this book for anyone, especially those with young children. It is a wonderful book.

:) :) :) :) :)

Thomas S. Monson loved spending summers at his family's cabin in Utah's Vivian Park. One summer day, he and his best friend, Danny, decided to clear a field so they could gather with their friends and have a campfire that night. The tall, stubborn weeds would not pull out easily. So Tommy had the idea to burn them up instead.
He knew he shouldn't use matches without permission from his parents. But he ignored the feeling that warned him of the danger and raided the matchbox in the cabin. Back in the field, he lit one little match and prepared to set the parched June grass abaze...
Readers of all ages will resonate with this wonderful true story that demonstrates the blessings of obedience and "the dangers that can come from something as small as one little match."

DOES THIS INSECURITY MAKE ME LOOK FAT? by Michelle Wilson--Interview

DOES THIS INSECURITY MAKE ME LOOK FAT? by Michelle Wilson. I loved this book. Take a look at my review here, and Michelle's awesome interview below.

What made you decide to become a writer?

I don't think I ever decided to become a writer. It just seemed I always was. I composed my first song when I was seven. It was a lovely (by that I mean awful)  little piece called "I'm Yours," written for my parents to tell them how lucky they were to have me. :) In 4th grade, when I won the school poetry contest (though I still struggle with poems that don't rhyme. Lol.)  I've kept a journal since I was thirteen. Just a few years ago, my parents handed me a large box of letters I had written them over the years. There is something cathartic about writing, something I've always loved.

If I could pinpoint the moment that set me on the path to where I am now, though, that would be about eight years ago, when I had had a pretty amazing experience. As I was telling my husband about it and how I wished I could share it, and he said, "Why don't you start a blog?" I had no idea what a blog was, other than it sounded really funny. But, I took the plunge and created my first blog. It was there that my love of writing inspirational non-fiction for women was solidified.

A few years ago I was asked by an editor to write a fiction novel. As I took on that challenge, I discovered the joy of creating a characters that I loved, seeing them grow, and learning from them.

To me, there is something supernal about creating something tangible from thought. One moment it's in my mind, and the next it's on paper or a screen. It becomes real, it begins to make sense--and I am hopelessly addicted.

Who inspires you?

That's a loaded question. Of course chocolate is my fallback. Lol!  But, I'm assuming you mean literary-wise. I grew up reading all of L. Frank Baum's books. My imagination soared, and I wished I was Dorothy. I wanted to go an adventures, to be special - to have my own scarecrow. I also loved the Nancy Drew books--you know, the ones with the yellow spines. I was drawn to characters that met their challenges head-on, and I wanted to be that way, too.

As far as non-fiction goes, I love Jeffrey R. Holland's style of writing and speaking. He infuses doctrine with story and emotion, and I am moved every time. I do love me some Mary Ellen Edmonds, too. I love and believe in the power of laughter. She taught me that it was okay to be funny and teach/write things of an eternal nature.

What would you like your readers to get out of your writing?

My theme across fiction and non-fiction is one of empowerment. I would hope that readers will come away from my book feeling great about themselves. I think a lot of women live apologetically, shy and short of their potential and right to be happy.  I want them to see who they really are, and the power they truly have. In the end, I hope they can see themselves more clearly as God does, for He thinks we are all pretty amazing.

I write what my daughter calls 'funspirational.' I like to laugh a lot, so in turn, I tend to mix humor into my writing. I also love to find deeper meaning and lessons in the everyday things around me. My readers, I hope, will laugh a lot, cry a little, and be motivated and empowered beyond their expectations.

You know, I was talking to a speaker/author once after I had attended a speaking engagement of hers. She said, "Most writers are writers that speak. I am a speaker that writes." That phrase describes me. As much as I love to write, my first love is speaking, in particularly, teaching about things of an eternal nature. I love to stand in front of people--especially a group of women--and teach the things I know are true.

Where did this idea come from?

The title came before the book did. I had terrible self-esteem as a teenager. I allowed people around me to define my worth, and I was miserable. It was only when I looked to God for my worth that my confidence and joy grew. As I continued to write on my blog about the power of perspective and other things, the response I got was tremendous. Women would comment or email me and shared the struggles they had with fear, doubt, and insecurity, but how they also gained confidence, perspective, and love for themselves as they turned to God for direction and definition. I want as many women as I can reach to know that there can be relief from the weight of unrealistic expectations and comparisons, and that we really to have a great work to do here.

Any advice for aspiring authors?

Yes! Write what you love. Study technique and protocol. Join a critique group and a writer's group. Embrace constructive criticism and the editing process. Believe in yourself and your book. When you done all these things, then be bold! Do what you can to get your book, fiction or non, into the hands of those that can help you reach people. Surround yourself with good writers and better friends. Attend writer's conferences and pitch, pitch, pitch your book!  I landed this contract from a pitch session. They can work!

Also, try to hone your brand- who you are. Not just what you write, but how and why. This will be the consistent adhesive that will glue all your projects together. This is what your fans will come to love and expect in each book.

And, of course, have fun and love what you're doing!

What can we expect next from you?

I am currently working on my next book, a digital single, through Deseret Book. I'll be able to tell you a bit more about it in the coming months, but for now, I can tell you that it will be funspirational and empowering, too.

Where can we purchase your book?

It's available through DeseretBook.com, and in all Deseret Book and most LDS book stores, as well as on Amazon.com.

THANK YOU, MICHELLE!

DOES THIS INSECURITY MAKE ME LOOK FAT? by Michelle Wilson--Book Review

DOES THIS INSECURITY MAKE ME LOOK FAT? by Michelle Wilson. This is a great book for the new year. Michelle dives into some of the issues that woman have with themselves. She takes a humerous approach to subjects then teaches how The Lord sees women and how we should see ourselves. She makes things very obtainable and fun. This is an inspirational book that will be difficult to put down for anyone (including men) to put down. I highly recommend it to everyone.

:) :) :) :) :)

• Why do clothing stores hang fun-house mirrors in their dressing rooms?
• The laundry doesn’t cry when it’s not folded, so why should I?
• Can I be confident even if an elevator calls me fat?
Michelle Wilson’s humorous yet poignant insights help women examine the limitations we place on ourselves out of insecurity and self-doubt. We have faith in God, but do we know that He has faith in us?
When we see ourselves with God’s eternal perspective, we can feel confident and whole—even in our imperfection. Just think what we might accomplish if we truly believe that we are more important than we know, stronger than we realize, and extraordinary in every way.
